Hemp milk is made from the seeds of the industrial hemp plant, which cannot be legally grown in the United States, but has been grown in Canada since 1998. It tastes rich and creamy with a slight nutty flavor. Commercially available hemp milk generally contains "0.00%" tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the psychoactive (mind-altering) substance in marijuana.
It is growing in popularity as a substitute for cow milk, especially among vegans, those who are lactose intolerent or allergic to milk. Both hemp milk and soy milk (another cow milk alternative) have about the same amount of protein and fat as cow milk. But unlike soy milk, hemp milk is reported to be a good source of calcium and omega-3. This is one reason hemp milk is growing in popularity.
